I hear this phrase a lot lately...design thinking. Especially in the corporate world - which I find particularly amusing as it's not really 'design' thinking.. it's more about designing a new way of thinking about things that have already been thought about or not thought about at all and following some sort of a process to get to the best possible creative outcome - it sometimes gets called innovation. A good article on design thinking and what it actually is and isn't can be found here
As a designer you often get told what to do by a client and told how to fix something to make it look a certain way. I find this process is quite the opposite of what design thinking is supposed to foster. We studied creative thinking A LOT at uni and tafe- it was one of the most interesting subject we took but unfortunately most of us designers don't get to use those skills enough in the studio - its probably because we don't have enough time to truly develop a client's brief using these processes as more often than not we are expected to turn around a 100 page book in an hour. In the next journal I'll talk more about the process of thinking like this and how we can use it in everyday life as common folk or graphic designers.
